Social Studies

The minimum requirements for a student to attain an Alberta high school diploma include Social Studies 30 level (30-2, 30-1 or French Social Studies 30-1).

Social Studies

There are three course streams for Social Studies at Paul Kane.

  • Students choosing 10-2 follow the 20-2 and 30-2 course stream through Grade 11 and 12. This stream is ideal for students entering trades or the work force immediately after high school.
  • Students choosing 10-1 follow the 20-1 and 30-1 course steam through Grade 11 and 12. This stream is ideal for students considering post-secondary studies in most colleges and universities.
  • The Advanced Placement stream is designed for students who have an interest in European History. AP Social Studies students write the same final exams as the "dash one" students with the addition of the AP European History exam (May of Grade 12).

It is possible to switch between streams. Students who score 45% or higher in Social Studies 10-1 may move on to Social Studies 20-2. The same rule applies for students switching from Social Studies 20-1 to Social Studies 30-2. Students may switch into Advanced Placement with teacher and/or department head consultation.
