Specialized School Programs

At Paul Kane High School we are committed to success for our students. This series of specialized programming is designed to meet the needs of all students coming in to our school... from all walks of life!

Courses

Use the links below to navigate to the different options available.

In addition to the 10-20-30, 14-24, 13-23-33 level courses offered in all the disciplines, we offer the following options:

Team Leadership

Team Leadership is an opportunity for students who have a keen interest and desire in developing their leadership skills, such as teamwork, decision-making, reflection, organization and communication. Through active participation in organizing and promoting student activities, students will understand the process of leadership, be able to apply leadership skills to daily life and continue to develop a positive self-esteem. Students who participate in Team Leadership will quickly see the value of such skills and how they relate to everyday life.

Team Leadership Students will be involved in service activities both in the school and the community. Students need to be self-directed, and a role model for fellow students. Past and current leadership students feel that they have the opportunity to positively affect others.

Full Year 10 Program

Full Year 10 is a one year academic high school program created to meet the needs of students who are considered to be "at risk" of dropping out of school. It is designed to meet the needs of students who have not been successful in grade nine, yet who have the potential to be successful. It is not a class for students who disrupt the class because of poor behavior, but rather a class for students who need to catch up academically. The Full Year 10 Program is not a replacement for, and has different requirements than, the Integrated Occupations Program.

The students enrolling in this program are ready to address their learning issues and welcome the challenge or redefining themselves within this High School’s Academic community.

Students that are considering this program will be referred by their junior high school counsellor or their high school teachers. Special cases will be considered on an individual basis. Individual interviews with parents, the student applicant, class teacher and counsellor will assist with the selection process for this program. Enrolment is limited to a maximum of 18 students.

OnSIDE (On Student's Individually Directed Education)

OnSIDE meets the needs of students who:

  • wish to carry more/different courses than the regular timetable allows;
  • are unable to attend all classes regularly due to illness, sports and work commitments or other personal reasons;
  • require a less structured environment to achieve academic success;
  • need to make up credits for high school graduation.

Students take courses using materials prepared by Alberta Education or the teacher.

Students take courses using materials prepared by Alberta Education or the teacher.

English as a Second Language Program (ESL)

English as Second Language courses are for those students whose level of English language proficiency precludes them from full participation in the learning experiences provided in our school without additional support in English language development.  Planned, systematic support enables students to listen to, speak, read and write English with sufficient proficiency to meet their academic goals.

The ESL program is divided into 5 levels, with levels 2, 3, and 4 as 5-credit courses:
  • Level 1 (non-credit) is intended for newcomers acquiring a literacy level of English.
  • Levels 2, 3, and 4 prepare students for academic courses through English skill development and acquisition of basic knowledge of Canadian culture, geography, history, and literature.
  • Level 5 (non-credit) is for students who require assistance with subject-specific language.
