Social Studies

General Information

Social Studies 10-1 or Social Studies 10-2 is a compulsory course for all grade 10 students and prerequisite for Social Studies 20-1, 2, 30/20-2, 33 programs.  Both course sequences are designed to further the student's understanding of history, geography, and economic, political and global issues.

Social Studies 10-1AP is designed for students who have a particular interest in history and social issues and leads into the Social Studies 20-1AP - 30AP programs.  All students are required to complete either Social Studies 30 or 33 in order to obtain a High School Diploma.

Note: Course numbering sequences will change as new curriculum in Social Studies moves through the grade levels.

Registration Guidelines:

It is recommended that students have the following minimum levels of achievement as prerequisites to entering programs in Social Studies:
  • Grade 9 students whose final mark is less than 65% in Social Studies 9 should enroll in Social Studies 10-2. Students with a final mark of 65% or more in Social Studies 9 should enroll in Social Studies 10-1.

  • Grade 10 students who receive a mark below 45% in Social Studies 10-1 should take Social Studies 10-2/20-2/33. Students whose marks are between 45% - 49% in Social Studies 10-1 should register in Social Studies 20-2. Retroactive credits for Social Studies 10-2 would then be earned upon successful completion of Social Studies 20-2.

  •  Grade 11 students who receive a mark below 45% in Social Studies 20 should take Social Studies 20-2 followed by Social Studies 33. Students whose marks are between 45% - 49% in Social Studies 20-1 should register in Social Studies 33. Retroactive credits would be earned for Social Studies 20-2 upon successful completion of Social Studies 33. Students who receive a mark of 70% or more in Social Studies 33 have the option of enrolling in Social Studies 30. Due to emphasis on essay writing in Social Studies 30, it is recommended that students successfully complete English 20-1 prior to registering in Social Studies 30.
Both Social Studies 30 and 33 are diploma examination courses.  Social Studies 30AP students will write the Social Studies 30 diploma examination and the European History Advanced Placement examination.  For further information on AP exams, refer to the section in the guidebook on "Advanced Placement".

The Social Studies 10-1/20-1/30 sequence is intended for students with strong skills in reading, writing, and analysis of issues.  Social Studies 30 is accepted as an entrance course for university programs.  Social Studies 10-1AP/ 20-1AP/30AP will take the students' skills to a higher level, and provide extra preparation for university level Humanities courses.

The Social Studies 10-2/20-2/33 sequence focuses on many of the same issues and events as the 10-1/20-1/30 continuum; however, the reading and writing requirements and depth of study are less intensive.  Social Studies 33 is accepted as an entrance course by many colleges and technical schools.

The Advanced Placement Social Studies 10-1/20-1/30 sequence is intended for students who enjoy Social Studies and are interested in the wide-ranging topics a history course provides (see course descriptions).

Can students who did not take Social Studies 10-1AP still register for 20AP?  Although priority will be given to students who have completed the Grade 10 Social Studies AP preparation class, interested students who have successfully completed Social Studies 10-1 may see the Social Studies Department Head to discuss taking Social Studies 20AP.

Note: All Advanced Placement students must enroll in 8 credits of Social Studies at the grade 11 level. (Social Studies 20AP and European History 25AP).
